1.
Examining the work: Setting the Foundation –
Through discussions with my site supervisor, I-Coach, and principal,
about the district 11 tools for the 21st Century training, which
focused on using web 2.0 tools and new technology roll out in the classroom it
came to my attention that not many teachers were using these new tool. It was noted that about 30% of teachers on my
campus were incorporating these new tool and technology in their classroom and
about 5% was using them every day. As
a result my questions are: How many teachers have implemented these new tools
in their classroom? Have they seen improvements in their student’s success
compared to teachers that have not implemented any of the new tools? How did the teachers receive the training and
do they believe they need more training to effectively integrate these new technology
devices and tools in their classroom to improve their student performance.
2.
Analyzing data-
I will be using qualitative and quantitative data for my action research
project. I will use quantities date in the form of test scores, benchmarks,
progress reports, and report cards. I will use Qualitative data in the form of
interviews, surveys, and observations. I will gather data from key stakeholders
on each campus to help me gain a better understanding of my subject.
3.
Developing deeper understanding-
I will use the qualitative and quantitative data to help me build a
deeper understanding of my project.
Interviews, surveys and observations will play a key role in this
project. I will use interviews and surveys
form the principals, I-Coaches, teachers, students and the district technology
director to gain a perspective from all stakeholders involved.
Engaging
in Self-Reflection-
For my
self-reflection I will record and take notes during interviews, and
observations, I will discuss my notes with my principals after classroom
walk-through to try to better understand my observations and gain another’s
perspective on the walk-through. I share
my finding with my site supervisor and other teachers see if I missed anything
and if I need to reassess my focus for the project. I will work on using journaling to keep up
with my thought and ideas on my project and share them with other colleagues to
gain new insight in to my subject.
5.
Exploring Programmatic Patterns-
I have
discussed my project with my site supervisor many times and will continue to
ask for feedback and advice. My site
supervisor is a tremendous resource, because of her experiences as a technology
facilitator for many years. I will also rely on our campus I-Coach for new
insight and ideas to use in gathering information about technology and
curriculum integration. I will also take time to study experts’ ideas and
opinions on my subject.
6.
Determining direction-
It is hard for me to determine if I am 100% ready to start my action
research project. I believe my purpose
is clear, and I have developed a good plan with the help of my site supervisor,
principal, and others. Through constant reflection, my plan might and should
change over time as I gain new knowledge and insight. It is important for me to be aware that it is
ok for my plan to change and it can only help my project to be successful. I will use feedback, suggestions and
self-reflection to make the changes as needed.
7. Taking
action for school improvement-
I choose template 7.1 to help organize my action research project. I found this temple worked best for me and my
project. I have discussed my project and shared it with key stakeholders on my
campus and will rely on their knowledge to help me stay focused on the goal of
my project.
8.
Sustaining improvement-
I plan to use this project as learning opportunity for me and my
colleagues in my district. I will share my findings principals, teachers,
technology facilitators, and the technology director for the district. I will
share my findings with anyone who is interested in my project because I believe
it will help teachers and students in my district become more successful.

I think your wonderings in your earlier post fit nicely with the template you filled out, detailing the tools you will use to gather the data. You seem to have a nice balance of qualitative and quantitative data gathering tools. Looking forward to your research!

DeleteTechnology isn't going away and the quicker educators can figure out how to make it work for them, the better off we'll be. Good luck! I look forward to your findings!
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comment.
DeleteWill you be giving the teachers on these campuses a heads-up about what you're looking for? Will you be looking at a teacher who is proficient, one who's experimenting, and one who is still shying away in your 2-3 teacher sample on each campus? How will you bring together the data if students are not in the same tier? For example, if your proficient Web 2.0 user is teaching honors kids while your non-user is teaching remedial classes, will you need to look at past and present benchmarks in Eduphoria in order to develop an accurate picture of the impact of the two different teaching styles? Will you be able to encourage non-users to move into a more experimental mindset? Or will you want them as they are in order to be able to view the data side-by-side to make your comparison?
ReplyDeletePlease don't feel like you need to answer all or any of these. They are just thoughts I had while moving through your plan. Maybe one of the questions will trigger something that sends you in a positive direction. If not, be sure to report in your Week 4 assignment that Farley's comment was a load of rubbish and that he doesn't deserve to be a Follower on your blog.
I am going to use the surveys to help me pick teachers at different levels,( proficient, competent, Novice). I am going to limit data collection to classes with students at the same level. I will look at data from last year before our new training and compare it to this year after the training. Within this plan I am not going to encourage non-users, but I hope I can use my findings after I am finished to start encouraging more incorporation of technology in all classes. Thank you for your comments.
DeleteI love the way technology has opened so many doors in education over the years. I can't wait to read your research on how technology works for you!
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comment.
DeleteI also built my action research based on professional development that we received so I understand your viewpoint on wanting to learn about the effectiveness and implementation of the trainings. I just have a question; Why did you decide to conduct your action research in two campuses? A suggestion is keeping it focused in one campus but utilizing more teachers in each stage of implementation for your focus group. This will create a stronger culture for technology than if you only involve a couple of teachers. Doing this for the two campuses might be too overwhelming. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteThe reason I decided to conduct my action research on both campuses was to see how two similar campuses were using the training. Was one campus in-bracing it more than the other and was there a diffident in performance because of it. I have been talking to my site supervisor about narrowing my focus to just my campus, thanks to your suggestion. I am not sure yet how my plan will evolve, but thank you for your comment.
DeleteWe share similar action plans and I would love your feedback on mine when you have time. I would like to know the specific 11 tools you guys used for professional development. I am just curious as I must plan and develop similar pd training in my own district. Also what is an i-Coach? Best of luck on your research! I will definately follow your progress..looks like a great plan!
ReplyDeleteIf you go to this web page it will show you all the tools that were involved in our districts training. http://11tools.blogspot.com/.
ReplyDeleteAn I-Coach is our campus curriculum specialist, who also helps with some technology needs on our campus.
Thank you for your comment
I am also doing a technology 1:1 action research plan, our 8th graders will be receiving iPads in a couple of weeks. Teachers have had Mac book trainings for 1 year now and while I am proficient at creating products, I just don't find the time like I should. Something I wish our technology directors would do is, pick just 1 maybe 2 things to I need to try within a time period. It gets to overwhelming at times and then nothing gets down. But if we break it into small chunks of things to try and reflect over, more people might start using the tools. Also content specific trainings always are more welcomed than just a whole approach. Good luck and I look forward to sharing data.
