EDLD 5363 Week 5 Final Project

This has been a crazy week with trying to complete my project and getting everything wrapped up at my school for the break.  But this has been a fun and educational project for me also.  I was not sure how this project was going to turn out with my group members being so far away, but using Google Docs and Google Hangout made it very easy for us to communicate and get all our work done. Google Drive was also a very good resource for us to share all the video and audio files.  The knowledge and resources that I gained will help me in the future when I have to work and collaborate with other teachers and students.

EDLD 5363 Status of Campus-Supervised Internship and Action Reasearch

I have completed  30 hours for my campus-supervised internship activates to date.  I have completed activates in competencies 02 in Domain I and 04, 05, and  06, in Domain  II for example:  school safety, Teacher (Staff) Evacuation and Development, Campus Culture, etc…  Under student discipline I was able to observe the principals reviewing a student discipline history with him,  and what his future might be on the campus if he could not get his behavior under control.  The principals did a good job of not just focusing on his bad behavior but also trying to encourage him by talking about all the good things he had been doing also.  I also was able to observe the planning of the final exam schedule and all the considerations and conflicts you have to navigate in developing it.  One of the most important things I got to do is make a home visit to discuss with a student's  behavior with the parent  and what plans the school was making to help him be successful.
I also completed  ISTE Performance Indicators in: TF-VII-C, TF-V-A, and TF-III-D1.  I have had the opportunity to help teachers on my campus resolve issues with their active boards, setup computers in their classrooms, install software, and assist students in the computer labs.
After the winter break I plan on working with one of the lead technology teacher on campus to get more teachers who need help with equipment and software to come in the morning or afternoon for help if needed.  Our goal is to get most of the teachers on our campus to take advantage of all the technology and resources the district has provided to them.  I also will be working the principals on my campus to develop an Autism staff development for my campus in the fall.    So far I feel my internship is going ok.  I am not quite where I would like to be, but I think I have a good plan in place to get there.
I am revising my action research project at the moment.  I have talked to my principal, my campus I coach and other teachers about what program and software they are using in their classrooms and if they are seeing any progress in their students performances.  The one thing that I have learned so far is there is no consistency in what software or web based resources that each classroom is using.   This has made it a challenge for me to decide what direction I want to go with for my project.  At first I was going to look at the districts web 2.0 training and what effects it had on teachers teaching and for the teachers that incorporated some of the tool into their classroom did it translate into student performances gains.
But on my campus it seems that a lot of teachers are not using much or any of these new resources.  In our lesson plans, it is required for us to show how we are using these tools in our classroom.  Each math and language arts  teacher is supposed to have stations set up for small group instruction and incorporated technology component in them.    After talking to my principal she said they are indicating in their lesion plans that they are using the resources in their classroom, but when the principals visit the classroom they are not seeing them implementing them in their groups.  And so far after looking at the date the teachers that are implementing the group correctly in their classrooms are not show much or any gains in student performance at this time.   I have talked to my campus supervisor and she gave me some ideas and advice that I am going to review over the winter break.  After reviewing her suggestions,   I will decide I want to stick with my original plan or change it.

EDLD 5363 Web Conference 12/09/12

I attended the web conference on 12/09/12 with Dr. Abernathy.  We discussed what we needed to turn in to TK20 and when we needed to turn them in.  We discussed what needed to be completed and tuned in week 4 and 5.  The group was very helpful in giving ideas of how to share and work with your group, with tools like Google Docs, Drop box, and Google Drives.  Google Hangout was also discussed on how it made it really easy to collaborated and work with your group.  One the students made the suggestion to film many clips but make them small so they would be easy to share them with your group members. All the web conferences I attended were very helpful because all the students were willing to share their ideas and help each other when they had problems.

EDLD 5363 Web Conference 11/26/12

I attended the web conference on 11/26/12 with Dr. Abernathy.  We discussed our groups and made sure everyone that needed a group found one.  We discussed our project for the next week which was making a podcast and the differences between a podcast and a vidcast.   We could make either one we wanted to.  We also discussed how to use Audacity to record and convert our script narration to mp3 files.  This conference was very helpful to me because the students that attended the conference were very helpful giving ideas and tips on how to use the different software like Audacity.

EDLD 5363 Web Conference 11/18/12

I attended the first web conference on 11/18/12 with Dr. Abernathy.  The conference was very informative and introduced the key parts and strategies for completing the course.  Dr. Abernathy discussed our week 3 - 5 assignments and that we were required to have groups of 3-5 people in each group.  She left it up to us to form our own groups which I was not that exited about.  I was able to join a group before the conference was over.  I also was not sure how we were going to work together on this project because we were all a little far from each other.  But doing the group we discussed how to use Google docs and other tools to help collaborate together to work on our projects. I felt better about the group project after the conference.

EDLD 5363 Week 1 Reflection

This week was fun and hectic at the same time.  Making my video was a very good learning experience for me.  I was able investigate some new tool that I can use in the future with my students. I looked at  Stuperflix and Knovio, but decided to use Move Maker this time because I never used it before.  I found limiting my script to a page and a half very helpful.  It allowed me to concentrate on the important point of my story and leave out unnecessary information.  It was still hard for me to get my video under 2 minutes, but after about 10 revisions and the help of my girlfriend and mother I got it done. I found Audacity to be a very good tool to record my voice and convert it to the right format to be uploaded to my project.  I still think my voice sound horrible on the video, but I bet most people feel the same. I found all the scripts from my class mate to be very interesting and I enjoyed reading them.  I look forward to making more video in the future.

Week 4 EDLD 5301: What I learned about action research

This week I learned that constantly reevaluating your project and talking to others will be very important in completing my project.  From talking to my site supervisor and the comments that I have received on my blog, I am re thinking parts of my plan. I am now looking at narrowing the focus of my project to only one campus and see if my plan can still work.  I am also looking at if I should narrow the number of subjects and grades I will use to collect data on.   I know this project will be challenging, but the more people I can talk to about it will help me reevaluate and make changes as needed.

Week 3 EDLD 5301: What I learned about action research

This week I learned it will be important for me to collaborate and share my thought with others.  We all see and approach thing differently and to get a true picture of a subject you must take different points of view into consideration. This will also help me to interpret my data better without biases and give me a true picture of what the data is saying. This will help me to conduct a sound project with reliable outcomes.

Action Research Plan

1. Examining the work: Setting the Foundation –
Through discussions with my site supervisor, I-Coach, and principal, about the district 11 tools for the 21st Century training, which focused on using web 2.0 tools and new technology roll out in the classroom it came to my attention that not many teachers were using these new tool.  It was noted that about 30% of teachers on my campus were incorporating these new tool and technology in their classroom and about 5% was using them every day. As a result my questions are: How many teachers have implemented these new tools in their classroom? Have they seen improvements in their student’s success compared to teachers that have not implemented any of the new tools?  How did the teachers receive the training and do they believe they need more training to effectively integrate these new technology devices and tools in their classroom to improve their student performance.

2. Analyzing data-
I will be using qualitative and quantitative data for my action research project. I will use quantities date in the form of test scores, benchmarks, progress reports, and report cards. I will use Qualitative data in the form of interviews, surveys, and observations. I will gather data from key stakeholders on each campus to help me gain a better understanding of my subject.

3. Developing deeper understanding-
I will use the qualitative and quantitative data to help me build a deeper understanding of my project.  Interviews, surveys and observations will play a key role in this project.  I will use interviews and surveys form the principals, I-Coaches, teachers, students and the district technology director to gain a perspective from all stakeholders involved.

Engaging in Self-Reflection-
For my self-reflection I will record and take notes during interviews, and observations, I will discuss my notes with my principals after classroom walk-through to try to better understand my observations and gain another’s perspective on the walk-through.  I share my finding with my site supervisor and other teachers see if I missed anything and if I need to reassess my focus for the project.  I will work on using journaling to keep up with my thought and ideas on my project and share them with other colleagues to gain new insight in to my subject.

5. Exploring Programmatic Patterns-
I have discussed my project with my site supervisor many times and will continue to ask for feedback and advice.  My site supervisor is a tremendous resource, because of her experiences as a technology facilitator for many years. I will also rely on our campus I-Coach for new insight and ideas to use in gathering information about technology and curriculum integration. I will also take time to study experts’ ideas and opinions on my subject.
6. Determining direction-
It is hard for me to determine if I am 100% ready to start my action research project.  I believe my purpose is clear, and I have developed a good plan with the help of my site supervisor, principal, and others. Through constant reflection, my plan might and should change over time as I gain new knowledge and insight.  It is important for me to be aware that it is ok for my plan to change and it can only help my project to be successful.  I will use feedback, suggestions and self-reflection to make the changes as needed.

7. Taking action for school improvement-
I choose template 7.1 to help organize my action research project.  I found this temple worked best for me and my project. I have discussed my project and shared it with key stakeholders on my campus and will rely on their knowledge to help me stay focused on the goal of my project.

8. Sustaining improvement-
I plan to use this project as learning opportunity for me and my colleagues in my district. I will share my findings principals, teachers, technology facilitators, and the technology director for the district. I will share my findings with anyone who is interested in my project because I believe it will help teachers and students in my district become more successful.

My week 3 Action Research Question

Purpose:
The research project is to examine the effectiveness of the district 11 Tools for the 21st Century Learner (web 2.0 tools) training and new technologies on student performance.

Problem:
It has been estimated that only about 30% of teachers have implemented some of the web 2.0 tools and only about 5% use them every day in the classroom on my campus.

Significance:
The district spent a lot of money on the new technology and trainings. As a result, it is important to evaluate how teachers utilized this technology and assess if student performance improved through technology integration.  Based on this type of information, I will investigate the effectiveness of the training which will assist the district to determine if teachers need additional training.  Students and teachers will benefit from better training if needed.

Wondering:
  1. How many teachers have implemented these new tools in their classroom?
  2. Have they seen improvements in their student’s success compared to teachers that have not implemented any of the new tools?
  3. How did the teachers receive the training and do they believe they need more training to effectively integrate these new technology devices and tools in their classroom to improve their student performance.

My agreed upon action research topic:

This summer, my school completed the 11 tools training for the 21th century, after completing the trainings, the district provided new computers, chrome books, I pads etc… to be used in the classrooms.  The training focused on introducing web 2.0 tools and how they might be implemented in the classroom.
My wonderings are:
  1. How many teachers have implemented these new tools in their classroom?
  2. Have they seen improvements in their student’s success, compared to teachers that have not implemented any of the new tools?

Week 2 EDLD 5301: What I learned about action research

What I learned this week is that action research can be very important tool across all areas of education.  The best way to make sound and effective decisions for change is to relay on your data.  Today we can collected and interpret data in hours or a day compared to the past when it took weeks.  As administrators and teachers we must leverage this technology to produce a better and safer environment for our students to achieve academic success.

Week 1 EDLD 5301: Educational leaders and blogs

Educational leaders can use blogs to communicate with faculty, staff, student, and parents.  Blogs allow leaders to share their vision and ideas for the school and how they would like to achieve their goals.  It also allows them to collect feedback from others thought comments.  They can share progress updates what success they have already made.  This could also be a good tool for building relationship and promoting community involvement in the school.

Week 1 EDLD 5301: What I learned about action research

This week I have learned that Dana( 2009), defines administrative inquiry as, “the process of a principal engaging in a systematic, intentional study of his/her own administrative practice and taking action based on what he/she learns as a result of the inquiry” (p. 2). IT administrative inquiry differs from traditional research in education because it relies on research performed within the school or district and not from outside experts.  Administrative inquiry is essential in continuing to make improvements in education. Reflecting and questioning our progress, seeking what is necessary for improvement allows for the how we the necessary adjustment to make the educational system better.
As a special education teacher of students with Autism our program is setup and driven by action research.  We collect data on our students daily and asses their performance and what changes we need to make to help them be successful in and out of our classroom. I collaborated with other teachers and district specialist on a weekly base to help improve and make changes to strategy and teaching methods. I will work on increasing the amount of time I use to reflect on my classroom and knowledge of the research in my field.
